What type of car do you want? My version of a fun road trip car isn't the same as others. An e63 amg wagon or an RS6 wagon. Or some type of grand tourer coupe with a roof box. I even went on a trip with a fully roll caged race car and had to wear headphones to talk to the passenger. So it depends on your comfort.

I have taken many road trips in my 2020 Subaru Outback XT Limited. It is incredibly comfortable, well-behaved on the road, and gets great mileage (upwards of 30mpg on the highway at 55-65mph).

The transmission however, a little annoying. The CVT transmissions can be annoying. The transmission fluid service is expensive and if one solenoid goes out, you need to replace the entire solenoid “brain”. That was the only repair I’ve had on this car. In terms of being road trip worthy. It’s amazing.

This way, I can run the engine overnight with the AC keeping us cool (summer road trip). In the morning, I’d move the car to the gas pump, fill it to the top, and get a receipt.

Dec 1, 2021 · My Acura TL Type-S was an awesome road trip car. It got nearly 30 mpg highway from a mid-00’s powerful V6 and the suspension was pretty comfortable considering how capable the car was for the time. I have to say having a car now with traffic-aware cruise control and lane-centering “autosteer” makes it a way better road trip car.

Jul 21, 2022 · Quiet, comfortable, safe, decent fuel economy given its size/weight/AWD, tons of space inside, ample power (even with 2.5L NA), plenty of off-road capability for what we need, ability to tow a small trailer/camper as well. Just a great road trip car overall. CVT = best transmission for road trips IMO. No hunting, just completely smooth.
