Nov 10, 2022 · We quite often get questions on this sub about which translation of Homer is the best. The answer is usually Lattimore for faithfulness to the Greek, Fagles for poetry, and some of the newer translations (Lombardo, Wilson, Mitchell, etc.) for ease of reading.

Nov 23, 2011 · Agreed. My favorite translation is the Fagles of both the Odyssey and the Iliad. I've read a number of translations, and I think his handling of the verses is beautiful and simply THE best. James, I strongly suggest that you try a verse version as it gives an amazing rhythm to the story--and if you do, read the Fagles.

Jun 13, 2022 · Pope's translations, the Butcher and Lang Odyssey and the Lang-Leaf-Myers Iliad, and A. T. Murray's translations for the Loeb series, are all common ones online. They're famously archaic in style. They have their places, actually -- well, Pope and the Lang ones do -- but definitely not best for a first time reader.

Jun 28, 2021 · Personally, I have the Ennis Rees translation and love it, it is a very easy read even if it doesn't capture every nuance of wording. For the Odyssey, I recently bought the Emily Wilson version and it is a very easy read too. It's also from 2017 so the translation's style is much more palatable for modern readers.

Miriam Kahn When I studied Homeric Greek, we used Lattimore for the Iliad and Fitzgerald for the Odyssey. I have a copy of Fagles but I didn't like it as much as Lattimore. The new translation by Ian Johnston is also in verse and seems to keep the meter and flavor of the Greek. Listening to the poem is the best way to experience it.

May 20, 2014 · If you would prefer a prose translation, then I loved E. V. Rieu's translations of both the Odyssey and the Iliad (as posthumously revised by D. C. H. Rieu and Peter V. Jones). I think there may be a difference here between US and UK preferred translations. Edit: Or check this page and go with the style you like best!
