WASHINGTON — The Senate voted along party lines Thursday to confirm Russell Vought as the next head of the Office of Management and Budget despite fierce pushback from Democrats. Although Democrats have been divided over various Trump nominees, they unified in opposition to Vought.

Vought was confirmed on a party-line vote of 53-47 after Democrats had exhausted their only remaining tool to stonewall a nomination — holding the Senate floor.

The Senate was headed for a confirmation vote Thursday night on Russell Vought, President Donald Trump’s nominee for White House budget director, who is planning to use one of the most powerful positions in federal government to zealously expand the president's power.

Mr. Vought, an architect of Project 2025 who served in the first Trump administration, will be at the center of President Trump’s plans to upend the federal bureaucracy.
