The students at Yick Wo Elementary School on Tuesday got a chance to ask the new leader of San Francisco Unified some of the burning questions families across the district have been wondering about for months.

Maria Su, the head of San Francisco's Department of Children, Youth and their Families, was approved by the San Francisco Board of Education in a 6-1 vote. She will be replacing Matt Wayne, who was ousted on Friday after serving as SFUSD superintendent since July 2022.

Maria Su's appointment to the role was approved in a 6-3 vote on Tuesday night, but not all parents and board members were happy with the choice. KTVU's Tori Gaines reports from San Francisco.

The San Francisco Board of Education on Tuesday officially appointed Maria Su as superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, less than a week after the previous superintendent resigned.
