The students at Yick Wo Elementary School on Tuesday got a chance to ask the new leader of Unified some of the burning questions families across the district have been wondering about for months.

San Francisco Superintendent Maria Su visited a North Beach elementary on her first day, following an accelerated appointment process and chaos over school closures.

Maria Su, the head of San Francisco's Department of Children, Youth and their Families, was approved by the San Francisco Board of Education in a 6-1 vote. She will be replacing Matt Wayne, who was ousted on Friday after serving as SFUSD superintendent since July 2022.
