Nearly two decades after his homecoming to Disney, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is going to get his own show from the creator of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one: A director noted for combining well-received comedy with groundbreaking technological innovations has just signed on for a new project at Disney, in which a wise-cracking cartoon rabbit will interact with live-action human characters. You guessed it: Jon Favreau’s making an Oswald The Lucky Rabbit TV show.

Decades later, in one of the strangest deals in Hollywood history, Disney CEO Bob Iger would trade the contract of sportscaster Al Michaels to Universal-owned NBC for, among other things, the rights to Oswald the Lucky the Rabbit and all the original cartoons that Walt and his animators had created.

The Mandalorian and Grogu director will shepherd an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series for Disney+.

Jon Favreau has been a linchpin of Disney+’s original series slate with flagship The Mandalorian and its offshoots while also taking on classic Disney animated characters on the feature side with the live-action/photorealistically animated The Jungle Book and the photorealistically animated The Lion King.
