World Figure Skating champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were on the American Airlines flight that collided with a US Army helicopter.

The plane crash on January 29 killed at least 67 people, with several skaters on board the commercial plane when it collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. Naumov’s parents and several other skaters were returning to Washington, DC, after attending the US Figure Skating National Development Camp in Wichita, Kansas.

The memorial event at Capital One Arena was co-hosted by Olympic champions Brian Boitano and Kristi Yamaguchi.

At the end of his figure skating performance, when the last note of his parents’ favorite song played in an arena packed with spectators and heavy with sorrow, Maxim Naumov dropped to his knees at the center of the ice.

Maxim Naumov, a figure skater who lost his parents Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov in the American Airlines plane crash, dedicated a moving performance to them during the Legacy on Ice event.

Sixty-seven people, all the people on both aircraft, died in the crash, including 28 members of the U.S. figure skating community — 11 young figure skaters, four couches and 13 family members — who had been to the U.

Figure skaters took to the ice in Washington, D.C., Sunday to honor the victims of the deadly midair collision that claimed the lives of 67 people, including many in the close-knit skating community.
