President Trump has threatened import tariffs on automobiles seemingly forever, ranging from 25 percent to 300 percent depending on how he’s feeling that day, but the administration seems poised to launch a new raft of import tariffs on February 1.

All Porsche and Audi EVs are currently built outside the US, making them particularly exposed to an increase in tariffs. The Audi Q5 is built in Mexico, while Porsche EV models are produced in Europe.

Volkswagen Group is eyeing Porsche and Audi assembly in the U.S. to avoid possible tariffs, and its Chattanooga plant and future South Carolina site are potential options, according to reports.

In the face of tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and Europe, the Volkswagen Group is considering moving Porsche and Audi EV production Stateside, per Handelsblatt. Before even taking office, President-Elect Donald Trump lodges decisions that would directly impact consumer's wallets.

The two Volkswagen Group brands have never built cars in the U.S., but a combination of lower taxes and higher tariffs might change their mind.
