Pennsylvania overnight—part of a growing wave of food thefts as inflation and supply chain issues turn everyday staples into high-value targets.

The theft was reported Saturday night of 100,000 organic eggs worth more than $40,000 from a distribution trailer in south-central Pennsylvania.

The theft of the eggs, which the authorities said were worth $40,000, comes as grocery shoppers across the country are facing empty shelves and higher prices for eggs.

About $40,000 worth of eggs were taken from a trailer belonging to Pete and Gerry’s Organics, police said. U.S. wholesale egg prices are at a record high.
