It's the beginning of a new era for Wisconsin license plates. After nearly eight years and 4.7 million letter and number combinations beginning with the letter "A," the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles will be debuting a new series of license plates that begin with the letter "B.

It took eight years to cycle through Wisconsin license-plate combinations beginning with 'A' and probably seven years to get through 'B' plates.

After nearly eight years, newly issued license plates in Wisconsin will start with the letter "B." Standard-issue, non-personalized plates had all started with the letter "A" since the Division of Motor Vehicles began issuing seven-character plates in 2017.
