The messaging platform Telegram on Friday told an Indian court it cannot monitor all the accounts it hosts to look for leaked customer data from India's Star Health, and will only block problematic content that is flagged to it.

The data leak, first reported in September, reportedly involved a hacker known as xenZen, who allegedly used Telegram chatbots and a website to publicise the stolen information.

The High Court gave the direction after Telegram said it was unable to search for leaks on its own but agreed to delete the leaked data if the insurer gave them details.

Star, which has a roughly $4 billion market cap, has been battling a reputational and business crisis since Reuters reported on September 20 that a hacker had used Telegram chatbots and a website to leak customers’ sensitive data, including tax details and medical claim papers.

The Madras High Court has instructed Star Health, India’s largest health insurance provider with a market capitalisation of approximately $4 billion, to assist Telegram in identifying leaked data from its messaging platform.
