Past tsunamis have hit Israel’s coast, and with Santorini’s seismic activity at an all-time high, the risk of another wave is being taken seriously. Authorities remain on high alert, as the region watches and waits to see what happens next.

ATHENS, Greece — Greece’s government declared a state of emergency on Santorini on Thursday after hundreds of undersea earthquakes shook the resort island for nearly a week.

People have been advised to avoid large indoor gatherings, small ports and areas where rockslides could occur.

A seismologist from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre has said it may take “weeks” to see how the ongoing earthquakes disrupting Santorini and other Greek islands evolve, warning that the disruption seen so far could amount to foreshocks ahead of a larger quake.
