The museum is very much a pottery frozen in time. So, some of it is on ground floor level whilst other aspects are on an upper level. I have two children, and were we visiting when they were the age of yours, we would probably have left the pushchair or buggy in the car and used an infant carrier or papoose for this visit. Definitely worth a visit and plenty to talk to baby about on the way round.
Can you get to the museum on public transport if you are staying near the centre?

I am thinking about visiting with my 6 -7 yr old grandson on April 1st/2nd. He loves clay and desperately wants to have a go at throwing on a wheel - will he be able to do so at any time over that weekend and do I need to book beforehand please?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We are open Tuesdays - Saturdays and Bank Holidays so will be open on Saturday 1st but not on the Sunday. There's no need to book. We're open 10am - 5pm and advise visitors to allow at least 2 - 3 hours on site as there's a lot to see. It's a self guided tour with plenty to see and do. Part of the tour features a demonstration of pottery throwing and you can also have-a-go at throwing a pot. It costs £3 plus admission to use the electric multi-throw wheel with the help of our thrower and there is a height restriction. If your grandson is not tall enough there is also a hand powered wheel which can be used to make a pot and this costs £1 plus admission. The throwing section can get quite busy at the end of the day at weekends so I'd recommend doing that first if it's what he's keen on trying. If you think you'll visit again within the next year it's better value to buy an Annual Pass and we have a lot of special activities coming up for the Easter holidays. I hope you and your grandson have a lovely time!
